India’s food production systems rest on the labour of women. They sow, harvest, save seeds, care for soils, preserve ecological knowledge and sustain households through climate shocks and economic uncertainty. Yet the women who keep these systems alive—particularly those from marginalised castes, minority communities, landless households and migrant families—remain among the least recognised and least supported. Without secure rights to land, they are excluded from the resources, institutions and decisions that shape agriculture and rural livelihoods.
In 2026, the Year of the Woman Farmer, we document stories of women in India’s varied food systems– farms, forests, fisheries, plantations– to explore and reveal the intersections of gender, land and marginality. Through deeply reported stories from India–from Andhra to Arunachal Pradesh, from Maharashtra to Meghalaya– this series will foreground the experiences, leadership and innovations of women who are reshaping food systems from the ground up.
