“Spotlight” : Media Fellowship For Reportage On Discrimination And Violence Against Women And Trans Persons With Disabilities
Rising flame and Behanbox invite applications from women journalists to produce deep dive reportage on discrimination and violence faced at the intersection of gender and disability. The fellowship will fund original reportage highlighting lived experiences, gaps in coverage, understanding, data, policy responses and awareness about the violence and discrimination.
What is the fellowship about?
We are offering 5 fellowships to women and marginalised gender journalists to investigate and produce original reportage around (but not limited to) the following themes:
- Violence against women and trans persons with disabilities: the various forms, areas, and around specific disabilities.
- Sexual and reproductive health and rights related violations experienced by women and trans persons with disabilities.
- Discrimination faced by gender marginalised disabled persons in the covid-19 crisis: access to vaccinations, healthcare, education, employment and so on.
- Violence related laws for women and protections for disabled women.
Who can apply?
- Women and marginalised gender journalists with more than 3 years of reporting experience.
- Print, digital and multimedia journalists
Duration of the fellowship
This is a 3 month fellowship. Selected fellows will attend a 5 day online workshop in july 2021 on understanding the policy, data and legal landscape as well as the everyday experiences, language and other issues on women and trans persons with disabilities. This workshop will be facilitated by rising flame.
Fellows will produce their one original long form report every month between august and october 2021.
Fellows will receive an all inclusive fellowship amount of rs 30,000 each for the duration of the project. No additional travel or other expenditure will be paid for.
Expected outputs
- Each fellow will be expected to produce 3 in-depth written pieces on the outlined themes between august and October 2021
- The reported pieces will be published on BehanBox as well as other reputed publications.

Multimedia Journalist - Job Description
Behanbox is hiring a multimedia journalist to join our team as we expand our coverage on gender related issues in India and meet our mission. As a journalist focused on gender reporting, you will have a unique opportunity to shape and contribute to gender journalism which is fast gaining ground globally. You will be researching, investigating and reporting on a wide range of critical issues to shine a spotlight on the visible and invisible inequalities, hold power to account and foster conversations and engagement among the community.
Responsibilities:
- Field Reporting and Investigations: Conduct on-the-ground reporting, investigations and fact-checking to gather first-hand information and insights. Develop a network of sources and establish relationships with experts, activists, and individuals within the gender field.
- Research: Conduct thorough research on gender related issues and developments in India in the policy, academic, civil society, legal space among others to inform the audience from a lens of gender and inequality. You will find compelling stories from these developments and find unique angles, creative and powerful ways to report them.
- Story Development: Identify untold or underreported stories related to gender and propose creative and impactful ways to cover them. Generate story ideas and collaborate with the editorial team to shape the editorial calendar.
- Data Analysis: Utilize data and statistics to support and enhance gender reporting. Interpret and analyze data related to gender issues and present findings in a compelling and understandable manner. Don’t worry If you do not have the knowledge and tools for data analysis yet, as long as you are willing to dig in and learn with us.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Gender Studies, public policy or a related field.
- 2-3 years of experience in journalism or public policy research and writing
Competencies:
- Knowledge and understanding of gender-related issues including but not limited to women’s rights, gender equality, LGBTQIA+ issues, intersectionality, and inequalities.
- Passionate about finding stories in the unlikeliest of places especially at the margins.
- Critical thinking skills to examine social norms, cultural contexts, and power dynamics.
- Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to gather, interpret, and present complex information in a clear and engaging manner.
- Comfortable working with various multimedia platforms
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments within deadlines

- Take our journalism to new frontiers by strategising with the editorial team on the best ways to take our content to existing and new readers in creative ways and increase our brand visibility
- Build and nurture our community through regular online and offline interactions, events and social listening to shape conversations along with our supporters
- Build partnerships and collaborations especially with institutions which include research, media, educational and others where our journalism finds a natural fit

Ideal Person For This Role
- A people person who loves interacting and building relationships, has deep listening skills and loves having engaging conversations with empathy
- 3-5 years of hands-on experience in audience and community building preferably for a media or/and a mission led organisation
